It's no secret to my friends and family that I'm not exactly the biggest fan of summer. The hot, humid, and muggy weather doesn't exactly entice me to spend large periods of time outdoors. However, one of my favorite things about St. Louis is that there is no shortage of free events taking place to lure me out of my air-conditioned apartment to explore the city.
This year our summer started off with a trip to Italy (recap posts to come soon!), so we officially kicked off the start of summer in St. Louis with the opening Friday of the Art Hill Film Series! This was a great event and I can tell it will end up being one of my summer favorites!
Each Friday in July, the Art Museum hosts a free movie on the famous Art Hill and this Friday was Top Gun. I was extra excited for this Friday because despite being a child of the 80s, I have never seen Top Gun - shocking, I know. What a thrill to see it for the first time in such a beautiful setting with several hundred other people!
The actual movie started at 9 pm, however, all the events kicked off at 6 pm which included a DJ, several food trucks, drink stands, and an art tent if one was feeling creative. These events in the park get crowded, so we headed over early. We got there around 6:30 pm, picked out a perfect spot for our blanket, checked out the food trucks, and settled in with our drinks and listened to the music. For anyone who hasn't been, based on our experience, arriving before 7:30 pm definitely gave you your pick of lawn space and shorter waits at the food trucks!
St. Louis summers are hot and earlier that evening was no exception, however, once the sun began setting it turned into a gorgeous evening and the backdrop of the basin could not have been more beautiful! All in all, this was the perfect way to spend a summer night in St. Louis. If you're local to the St. Louis area or passing through, be sure to catch one of the films for this summer's series:
- July 15 - Rocky
- July 22 - E.T.
- July 29 - Forrest Gump
